Faces: George Jones, left, sister-in-law Kathy Jones and her boys Jeremy, 4, Zachary, 18 months, along with Stephanie Vitiello and Teresa Scognamillo, far left, helped put up the Christmas tree at the Municipal Building in San Pedro.
What: George Jones, who runs George's Western Avenue Christmas Tree Lot, provided the 40-foot white fir, which he and local contractors donated to the city. He says it was Councilwoman Janice Hahn's idea to get a tree to help enhance the waterfront.
"I hope it becomes an annual event for San Pedro. I hope we can get a bigger one next year," Jones says.
About the tree: The 38-year-old conifer, from the small southern Oregon logging community of Butte Falls, Ore., was cut out to enhance the forest by thinning, as a part of a reforestation project, Jones said.
The tree was air lifted by a Vietnam-era military helicopter to prevent damage to the forest floor and trucked to San Pedro.
The Facts: The tree is decorated with 5000 mini lights, 150 ornaments, 70 bows, 50 candy canes, 50 snowflakes and 23 hand-made silver candles.
